Abstract:

This project aims to enhance the mental healthcare using a virtual reality (VR) technology. We develop a customized VR system and its healthcare contents with appropriate medical backgrounds. To support users’ immersion and presence, a holistic visual-audio-haptic interface is facilitated. The detailed goal of this project contains supporting technologies such as: · Narrative and scenario-based authoring tool for reconfigurable and flexible VR based psychiatric treatment contents · Deriving and implementing an adaptive contents model and library of scenes and objects for personalized treatments· Developing physiological signal interface for patient monitoringIn a initial stage of research, we investigate cognitive-behavioral therapy/mindfulness treatments for the management of psychological stress and application of biofeedback VR contents. The purpose is to maximize the treatment effect with customized contents using VR as an effective treatment tool, which is closely related to real life. Our research collaborates with various research teams (majorly from the department of Arts, the department of Medicine, and the department of Engineering) for the construction of virtual reality scenario and implementation of required technology. The future plan of this project is to seek the feasibility of applying the customized medical contents in low-cost VR devices for the wide usage of mental healthcare contents.
